Employment – Facility Maintainer

Part-time – 20-25 hours /week
$10 / hour


GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

The Caretaker contributes to the effective operations of the Prospect Road Community Center. The position is responsible for the overall cleanliness, maintenance and security of the facility. Duties will be performed in a professional, proactive and quality manner to ensure a safe, sanitary and attractive appearance of the building for its users.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
The Caretaker is directly accountable to the Facility Director and must inform he/she of all cleaning or maintenance issues concerning the community centre and grounds on a regular basis. This position has moderate supervision as the incumbent will be required to function autonomously, with supervisor available to answer questions and provide input.

FUNCTIONS:

Cleaning Duties

  • Keep facility grounds, contents, furnishings in and about the facility in good appearance and in a clean, tidy, sanitary condition.
  • Perform duties using proper safety precautions and comply with all WHMIS regulations for themselves, members, staff, volunteers and the public.
  • Sweeps, mops, or vacuum rooms, halls, rooms and entrances.
  • Dusts and clean desks, chairs, tables, ledges, and other furniture.
  • Ensure waste separation / recycling containers are in placed, utilized and emptied.
  • Clean grease trap in kitchen (monthly or when required).
  • Clean all appliances & storage areas.
  • Cleans toilets, toilet seats, partitions, urinals, sinks, showers, dispensers and apply appropriate disinfectants daily to the lavatory equipment in order to maintain the highest possible sanitary standards. Mops and disinfects washroom floors and shower room floors daily.
  • Replenish toilet tissues, soap, and paper towels in the washrooms.
  • Keep the interior of the building free of all rubbish.
  • Damp mops spills and stains as necessary.
  • Wipes furniture, games, equipment, supplies.
  • Dust and/or wash walls, windowsills, ledges, counter tops and woodwork.
    Polishes furniture.
  • Clean all interior and exterior windows
  • Clean storage and display cases, book cases, and pictures
  • Strip, seal, finish and polish floors (quarterly). Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent injury or damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Steam clean or shampoo carpets.
  • Thoroughly cleans lights, ceilings, walls, carpets, duct work, entrance grates and mats, as scheduled by the Facility Director.
    Empty garbage
  • Clean all cleaning equipment (i.e. mop buckets, machinery, vacuum, etc.)
  • Change lights, repair fixtures – perform unskilled maintenance work.
  • Notify management (in writing) concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Assist or provide access to tradespersons, Power, Telephone or Cable, HRM Real Properties, technicians, to perform repairs, cleaning, installations, as may be necessary.
  • Move furniture, equipment, utilize ladders.
  • Test and maintain; emergency lighting, alarms, heat and public lighting systems. Inspect roof, clean drains, gutters and downspouts; doors and windows.
  • Receive all maintenance supplies & assist with the movement of other supplies / materials when they arrive.

Maintenance

Administration

  • Requisition and maintain supplies / equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Required to attend all pertinent meetings, thus working hours must be flexible.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all records and files.
  • Prepare written or verbal reports on all incidents, accidents by the end of your shift and report to management.
  • Check on daily usages for kitchen, meeting, gym, board rooms, green roof, etc.
  • Facility Usage / Events

    • Set-up, arrange and remove decorations, tables, chairs, staging. Use ladders and scaffolding (when necessary) to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
    • Ensure all rooms are thoroughly cleaned and set-up in accordance with customer’s and management instructions.
    • Ensure that lights are not left on in storage and mechanical rooms and check that no unnecessary lighting is being used when leaving any rooms.
    • Ensure that any unsafe situation is resolved where possible and report the situation to the Facility Director or designate. If serious phone authorities.

    Security

    • Ensure building is locked and secure.
    • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
    • Ensure that no one re-enters the building after it has been locked and secured at the end of building hours.
    • Outdoor

    • By using shovels or snow scoops keep assigned sidewalks, steps, entrances and roof free from ice and snow. Spread salt/s and when needed.
    • Remove garbage / rubbish from grounds and parking lot daily.
    • Change outdoor garbage regularly

    Other Duties

  • Maintain professional growth; upgrade skills and knowledge relevant to the position.
  • Run errands for the facility as directed.
  • Conduct all other relevant duties as requested by management
